Outline

Precious Dyer

1) How would you define a utopian society?
a) A Utopian society is a very peaceful society.
i) I think that’s a place where you don’t have to worry about working, where you can breathe fresh air.

2) Has the concept of utopia changed over time and/or across cultures and societies?
a) I believe that it has changed in a few ways. Its still has laws but laws also change.
i) If I lived in the United States, there is a law that I have to go by. That law isn’t guaranteed. It could change at anytime.

3) What are the ideals (e.g., freedom, responsibility, justice, community, etc.) that should be honored in a Utopian society?
a) I believe that legal and political justice should be honored. It just seems right.
i) I just think it should be honored because it sticks out to me the most.

4) Why do people continue to pursue the concept of a Utopian society?
a) They must believe that it will soon come to them. They think that one day they will live in a Utopian society.
i) Just like many people believe that one they will all go to heaven and live a peaceful life, many people believe that a utopian society will be given or they will one day live there.
ii) Many people have beliefs that things could happen some day.

5) How do competing notions of what a Utopian society should look like lead to conflict?
a) I believe it will lead to a conflict because one person might think it may look like this but then another might believe it looks like something else. They get in an argument and then it might just end in a fist fight.
i) People get into argument over really dumb things so what makes any body believe that they will not get in an argument over what they think a place should look like.
ii) I actually believe it looks different then what they say it looks like.
6) What is the purpose and / or consequence of creating and/ or maintaining a dystopia society?
a) If that was ever to be created, then everyone will be having a bad day everyday. It’s basically the opposite of a Utopian society.
i) The opposite of good, of course, is bad.
ii) People have bad days at bad places. Nobody would like to be at a place where they are surrounded by bad things
7) Is utopia attainable? At what cost would it be worth attaining?
a) I think if someone really put their mind to it then it really could be attained. I believe that cost would be a lot. Having to find a place to put it and getting everything together. It will be hard work, but it can be done.
i) Anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Also if you have the correct tools. It really could be done. Don’t ever underestimate yourself.
